Everyone Needs to Carry THIS When Walking Their Dog
This stuff saved the day last year.
Rosebud, a Board and Train dog, and I were working on her reactivity when a dog escaped a nearby home and came running toward us. Thankfully, Spray Shield was tucked into my bait bag. I grabbed it, shouted at the dog, shook the cannister, flipped the safety tab and sprayed.
It did EXACTLY what it was supposed: sprayed a citronella based deterrent at least 10 feet and scared the dog off.
I don’t mess around with loose dogs. I am not interested in meet and greets, or “seeing what happens.” The potential risks (both physical and behavioral) outweigh any benefits.
Although I do not support the use of fear or intimidation in training, I have no problem scaring off an incoming dog to keep my dog safe.
Don’t wait until you and your pup have had a traumatic experience to start carrying defensive equipment. Get your hands on some Spray Shield and make it part of your regular walking equipment. It may not stop every dog, but it’s better than being empty-handed.
