Yelping won’t stop puppy biting.

Here’s what to do instead

I think most puppy owners have heard about teaching puppies not to bite by yelping when his teeth hit your skin.

It’s supposed to mimic how another puppy would respond, but in my experience as a professional dog trainer, it just doesn’t work. Or worse, it actually makes the puppy bite more.

Puppy Sadie bites during play. Ouch!

I don’t recommend yelping.

Instead, try offering a toy or consumable chew (I love No-Hides) close to your puppy’s mouth before you touch him. If he feels the need to bite, the legal item is easily accessible and hard to ignore.

If the biting happens when you play, modify your play and/or equipment:

  • kneel on the floor instead of sitting so you can get up quickly if puppy starts to bite

  • sit in a chair or low stool to put yourself even further out of reach

  • use an extra-long toy so your hands stay further from puppy’s mouth
